The day-to-day running of the project is done by the women. They cook the meals, purchase the children's clothes and school needs, take them to the doctor when needed, mend their clothes, and keep the building and environment clean and tidy. This is undertaken on a purely voluntary basis.
We employ two trained teachers to run the nursery school - Mercy and Catherine - and they take care of the adminstration of the school. We run it as a commercial activity to help support the Orphans Support Project.
Grace Mzungu, the chairlady, is funded by the Methodist Church to work as a social worker for the church, Upendo being just one of her designated activities. However, she spends about a full-time equivalent on Upendo, and is the mainstay of the project.
She is ably supported by her Deputy Chairlady, Beatrice Mwero.
Michael, a trained counsellor and youth worker for the church, gives much of his time to the children, offering counselling and educational sessions to them on Saturdays.
The women have formed a system of committees to divide up the work (Finance, Education, Public Relations and Welfare, Guidance and Counselling, Procurement and Feeding) which all report back to the Executive Committee. The women meet every Sunday afternoon to jointly discuss developments, solve problems, organise the tasks for the week ahead, and to share time together.
